Go as a River — Shelley Read

Set in mid-century Colorado, Go as a River follows Victoria Nash, a young woman whose life is shaped by love, loss and the changing landscape around her. After tragedy alters her family and her future, Victoria must find her own way forward, drawing strength from the land and from within herself. Shelley Read’s writing is quiet and powerful, rooted deeply in place and filled with emotion that unfolds slowly. It’s a story about resilience, belonging and the ways we learn to survive what we never expected.

The Last Midwife by Sandra Dallas

This novel centers on Gracy Brookens, the only midwife in a small Colorado mining town in the early 1900s. Trusted by nearly every family, Gracy finds her world shaken when she’s accused of a crime that threatens her freedom and her reputation. As the story unfolds, Sandra Dallas explores themes of loyalty, justice and what it means to stand alone in a close-knit community. The setting feels authentic and grounded, and the story honors the quiet strength of women who held families together in difficult times.

Wild by Cheryl Strayeds

In this raw and deeply personal memoir, Cheryl Strayed recounts her solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail after experiencing profound loss and heartbreak. With no prior backpacking experience, she sets out to rebuild herself step by step. The story is honest, messy and inspiring, filled with moments of fear, humor and clarity. Wild is about grief, healing and the quiet power of putting one foot in front of the other, even when the path feels impossible.

Elk, Deer, and More in GMU 181 and Surrounding Units

Fall in the Rockies means crisp mornings, quiet forests and the start of hunting season. Rabbit Ears Basecamp sits right in the middle of it all, surrounded by some of Colorado’s best Game Management Units (GMUs).

Our property lies inside GMU 181, with easy access to Units 27, 14, 16, and 17. All are known for varied terrain, abundant wildlife and backcountry beauty. Whether you’re glassing for mule deer at first light or hiking timbered ridges for elk, this corner of the Rockies delivers the full Colorado experience.

Understanding Colorado Licenses

Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) manages all hunting permits by GMU, species, and season.

Elk: Some OTC rifle options remain for 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons in certain nearby units. Archery elk is now draw-only for nonresidents.

Deer: Mule deer tags are limited draw only, with most applications due in April for the primary draw.

Bear: OTC and add-on tags are available for select GMUs during overlapping big game seasons.

Moose: Draw-only with very low tag numbers.

Colorado also offers a secondary draw in June for leftover limited licenses and OTC options later in summer.

Weather: Fall can swing fast between sunny afternoons and freezing mornings. Snow is common by November.

Terrain: Expect a mix of pine forest, sage flats, and high ridges between 8,000 and 10,000 feet.

Access: Public lands are plentiful but mixed with private parcels. Download offline maps and respect property boundaries.

Safety: Hunters using rifles must wear at least 500 square inches of fluorescent orange or pink above the waist plus an orange or pink hat.

Tips from the Locals

Scout early if you can. Elk move often once the pressure builds.

Dress in layers and always carry rain protection.

Break in your boots before the trip.

Keep game bags handy for quick pack-outs in warm weather.

Start your mornings early and glass clearings at first light.

1. Pack Layers You Can Peel On and Off

The weather here is a shape-shifter. Mornings start cold, afternoons warm up, and the temperature drops again as soon as the sun dips. Bring:

Base layers like breathable long sleeves or merino wool tops

Cozy mid-layers like fleece, flannel, or a favorite sweater

A warm insulated jacket for evenings

Thermal tops and bottoms if you are coming later in the season

Pro tip: if you start to feel sweaty on a hike, take a layer off. Dry layers keep you warmer than damp ones.

2. Bring Rain and Snow Protection

Storms in the Rockies love to surprise you. A clear blue sky can turn cloudy in minutes. Pack:

A waterproof rain jacket

A rain cover for your backpack

Waterproof hiking boots or trail shoes

Gaiters or traction spikes if you are visiting later in the fall

The road to Basecamp winds through fields outside Kremmling, where sage and hay stretch to the horizon. As you climb, the landscape shifts. Evergreens gather, aspens shimmer and suddenly you are in a different world. A high-country mix of forest, meadow and sky. Tucked into these aspen-covered hills, at the base of Rabbit Ears Pass, is a place that has been part of our family story for decades. Now, it is becoming part of yours.

A Dream Years in the Making

When this property came up for sale it felt like everything had come full circle. We had driven past it countless times on our way to weekends in these hills. Suddenly, here was the chance to take our dream and plant it right where our roots already ran deep.

Starting With Strong Bones

The cabins themselves were in great shape, lovingly restored by the previous owners. The Ranch House was the exception. It stood empty, waiting for someone to give it some life. That became our first family project. We took Spring Break painted, decorated and transformed the space. More recently, all of us have been working together on the newest addition, Valleyview Cabin. It has been a hands-on adventure from the start.

Why “Basecamp”?

When we purchased the property, it was called Rabbit Ears Adventure Cabins. We loved the spirit of that name, but to us, this place is more than cabins. It is a starting point. A basecamp is where every adventure begins, whether that is chasing powder on a snowmobile, hiking to a wildflower meadow, casting a fly in a cold mountain stream or simply sitting on the porch with a hot cup of coffee.

For our family, Rabbit Ears Pass has always symbolized the heart of adventure. We’ve been coming to the area for decades. It has always been a basecamp for our adventures, and we hope it becomes the same for yours.

Our vision for Basecamp is simple. When you arrive, you feel at home. We have tried to think through the small details so you can drop your bags, take a breath and settle in. At the same time, we hope Basecamp sparks curiosity. The mountains outside your door are calling and we want every guest to leave with a story of their own adventure.

Unlike a resort or a cluster of vacation rentals, this is a small, family-run collection of stays. You will find quiet, you will find connection and you will find a location that is perfectly placed for exploring. Close to everything, yet far from the crowds.

An Ongoing Story

Rabbit Ears Basecamp is the story of a family who fell in love with a place and wanted to share it. It is a story of spring breaks spent painting, weekends swinging hammers, grandparents with tool belts, kids with paint in their hair and friends showing up when it mattered most.

And now, it is your story too. Every guest who stays here becomes part of what Basecamp is and what it will become.

We hope you will come see it for yourself. Unplug, explore and feel at home in the high country. Most of all, come stay wild. Because adventure starts where you stay wild.

When fall sweeps across the Colorado Rockies, the hills around Rabbit Ears glow with color. Leaf peeping season is short but spectacular, and there may be no better place to catch it than right here at Rabbit Ears Basecamp.

When to See the Colors

Around Rabbit Ears Pass, the best window for fall color usually lands in the last two weeks of September and the first week of October. Higher elevations peak a little earlier, while valleys can hold their color a few days longer. Weather and frost may shift the timing slightly, so it is always worth checking conditions before your trip.

Our favorite weatherman, Seth Linden from Seth’s Weather Report, says colors will be early this year.

Scenic Drives Near Basecamp

Some of the best fall drives in Colorado start right outside our door. A few favorites include:

Rabbit Ears Pass: Just up the road, this classic drive offers sweeping overlooks of golden hillsides and the Yampa Valley. Pull off for photos or simply roll the windows down and take it in.

Buffalo Pass: For those who like a bit of adventure, Buff Pass winds through dense aspen groves and looks out across Steamboat. The road is rough in places, but the views are worth it.

Highway 131 to Yampa and the Flat Tops Scenic Byway: This stretch takes you through wide ranchlands, historic towns and into the Flat Tops Wilderness. Dunkley and Ripple Creek Passes are especially beautiful in late September.

North Routt County: Head north toward Hahn’s Peak and Steamboat Lake. The drive mixes aspens, meadows and mountain views, with plenty of quiet pull-offs for photos or a picnic.

Favorite Local Spots

You don’t have to go far from Basecamp to find your own patch of color. Some of our go-to spots are:

Dumont Lake: Just ten minutes away, this alpine lake is ringed by glowing aspens. Pack a picnic and enjoy the reflections.

Walton Peak Trail: A moderate hike with big views. At the summit you will see a patchwork of gold and green stretching for miles.

Fishhook Lake Trail: A family-friendly hike where kids can crunch through fallen leaves and spot their reflections in the water.

Spring Creek Trail: A local favorite that often turns earlier than other spots thanks to the cool, shaded canyon.

Mandall Lakes Trail in the Flat Tops: A hidden gem with color from start to finish. Go as far as you like, the trail is beautiful the whole way. A little further out, it’s about a 1 hour drive from Basecamp.

Photo Tips for Capturing Fall

Whether you are using your phone or a full camera, a few tricks can help you capture the magic:

Go during golden hour: The hour after sunrise or before sunset gives you soft, warm light that makes colors glow.

Look for contrast: Frame the yellow leaves against the white bark of aspens to make the colors pop.

Use reflections: Lakes, ponds, and even puddles can double the beauty when the trees are mirrored in the water.

Zoom in on details: A single leaf, a cluster of branches, or sun filtering through the trees can be just as stunning as a wide-angle shot.

Keep the sun behind you: Bright colors shine best when the trees are front-lit.

Why Stay at Basecamp in Fall

Leaf season is fleeting, which makes it all the more special. At Rabbit Ears Basecamp, you are surrounded by aspen-covered hills and minutes from some of the best drives and hikes in the state. Spend the day wandering through glowing groves, then return to a cozy cabin, a warm meal and quiet under the stars.

What sets Basecamp apart is the balance. You are close enough to Steamboat to enjoy dinner out or a stroll through town, but far enough away to feel the peace of the mountains. No big crowds, no busy resort feel. Just family-run cabins, thoughtful details and aspens glowing outside your door.

Fall in the Rockies comes and goes quickly, which makes every golden day feel like a gift. So pack your layers, grab your camera and come watch the mountains change. Then come home to Rabbit Ears Basecamp and stay wild!

Friday kicks off with a Beer Stroll through downtown bars and restaurants. Saturday brings a beer garden at the base area with craft brews, a beef cook-off, stein-holding contests, live music, and a kid zone. It is Steamboat’s official toast to fall.

2. First Friday Artwalk (Sept 5)

Wander downtown galleries, boutiques, and creative pop-ups from 5–8 pm.
The Artwalk happens year-round, if you can’t make it in September!

3. Steamboat Farmers Market (Saturdays through Sept 20)

One of Colorado’s most iconic trail races. The 100-mile starts on Friday, the 50-mile on Saturday, with courses climbing Mount Werner and Rabbit Ears Mountain. Even as a spectator, it is inspiring to cheer these athletes on.

5. First Annual Zucchini Classic (Sept 13)

Yes, zucchinis on wheels. Locals decorate giant squash, strap them to derby bases, and race them down a track. It promises to be as silly and spirited as it sounds!

6. Tennis Ball Drop – Down the Ski Jump (Sept 20)

Part of the Fast & The Furriest 5K9 Doggie Run & Walk at Howelsen Hill. Buy a numbered tennis ball, watch them tumble down the 60-meter ski jump, and see if your ball lands first. Proceeds benefit the Routt Humane Society.

August in the Rockies is the golden hour of summer. The days are still warm, the evenings turn crisp, and the aspens are just starting to whisper about what’s coming next. It’s the perfect time to squeeze in a few more adventures before fall. From dusty trails to quiet lakes, here are seven of our favorite ways to spend late summer near Rabbit Ears Basecamp.

A little farther out, Stagecoach offers another slice of water fun. Cast a line for trout or northern pike, or bring along a canoe or kayak for a peaceful paddle. With fewer crowds than some lakes, it’s a great option for families who want space to spread out.

4. Horseback Riding with Local Outfitters

See the country the way ranchers always have, from the saddle. Local ranches around Kremmling and Steamboat offer guided rides that wind through meadows and aspen groves. Beginners are welcome, and rides can be as short as an hour or as long as a half-day adventure.

5. Mountain Biking on Rabbit Ears Pass

When the snow is gone, the forest roads and multi-use trails up on the Pass open wide for mountain bikers. Ride through thick stands of pine and aspen, climb to broad overlooks, and enjoy cool air even in August. It’s a workout, but the views at the top make it worth it.

6. Soak in Hot Springs After Adventure

After a day of dust and sunshine, nothing feels better than slipping into natural hot water. Strawberry Park Hot Springs offers a rustic, tucked-away vibe, while Old Town Hot Springs in Steamboat is family-friendly with slides and pools. Either way, it’s the perfect reset for tired legs.

7. Scenic Picnic on the Pass

Sometimes the best adventures are the simple ones. Pack a basket and head up Rabbit Ears Pass for a picnic with a view. Walton Peak and Dumont Lake both have spots where you can spread out a blanket, watch the sun drop low, and toast the last days of summer.
